Meat | Housekeeping TipCategory: Food and Nutrition Date Posted: 2006-11-18
A food rich in protein is meat. Meat is the flesh of animals. Meat contains a large amount of protein, an important food for bodybuilding. The most common meats used for food in our country are beef and pork. Goat's meat on the other hand is considered a delicacy in the northern provinces.
Why pork should be well cooked Pork should always be well cooked. It should be cooked until well done. Pork should not be cooked "rare." Beef on the other hand is sometimes cooked and served rare or medium rare. When meat is served "rare" it means it is half cooked. When it is cut, meat that is eaten rare is still red. But pork is an exception and should always be cooked very well. Why? Pork sometimes contains tiny worms, called trichinae, in the flesh. When pork is eaten rare, the worms get into the person's intestines where they grow and lay eggs. Then they get into the muscles. The person then gets sick of trichinosis. Trichinosis can result in death. Pork flesh may also contain tapeworms. When a person eats half cooked pork, the tapeworm goes to his intestines. It eats the food taken in by him. The tapeworm can grow several meters in length. Pork, beef and fish may contain small tapeworm. All these kinds of meat must be well cooked before they are eaten. |
