Starchy Food

Energy-giving foods are foods rich in starch. They provide the body with heat and energy for work. Rice, corn, ube, gabi, camote and cassava are foods rich in starch.

Our staple food is rice. It is always a part of our daily meals. The rice we usually eat is polished rice. Studies show however that unpolished rice is better than polished rice. It contains plenty of Vitamin B.

Why should you select yellow corn instead of white corn? Yellow food contains a substance called carotene. Carotene is changed into vitamin A by the body.

Roots used for food should be medium size rather than very large. Large old roots contain many tough fibers. In general, roots should be boiled with the skin on. They should be washed well before cooking. But cassava should always be well cooked. It should not be covered while boiling. Remove the cassava from the water in which it is cooked as soon as it is done.
