Birds Pet Care | Housekeeping TipCategory: Pet Care Date Posted: 2006-11-15
Birds make good companions, are fun to watch, and fill a home with sound. Each bird has its own personality, but there are similarities in temperament and general behavior within bird species. Decide what aspect of having a bird is most important to you. For example, canaries and finches are known for their song, color and activity. Finches are extremely social and are best kept as pairs or groups where they will form bonds. If you want a talker, consider a parakeet.
Preparing Bird Cage Basically birds need to be able to stretch their wings and flap them without hitting anything. Tall, narrow cages are not recommended because birds tend to move laterally and not vertically. Your cage should be large enough for your bird to express its natural inclinations to move around and flap its wings. The cage should be placed in an area that is well lit but not in direct sunlight. Keep them out of your carnivorous pets' and neighbor pets' reach. To make your birds feel secure and comfortable, keep their cage against a wall or in a corner at eye level if you hang it from the ceiling. Feeding Supply your bird with separate containers for food and water. Always present food in bite sized pieces not large chunks. Clean food and water containers daily. Feed your bird from these five food groups: 1) grains, cereals, seeds, 2) fresh vegetables such as spinach, carrots, parsley, squash and corn; 3) banana, 4) cheese, 5) protein-rich food such as tofu products, cooked beef, chicken, fish, eggs, peanuts. Medical Care You can avoid many health problems by ensuring you get a healthy bird in the beginning. Birds and other exotic animals are masters at hiding sickness. The first signs of a sick bird are usually subtle and easily missed. Consult your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following: Appearance: Fluffed up feathers, weakness, sitting on cage floor, swellings on body, bleeding, discharges. Breathing: Wheezing or click, tail bobbing. Droppings: Overly wet. Behavior: Stops singing, inactive, sleeping longer. |
