Cats Pet Care | Housekeeping Tip

Cats are more than fluffy things that don't require much care. If you want a quieter, gentler pet, choose a female cat. Males are usually livelier and much more vigorous.

If a cat appears to be shy of handling, do not attempt to smother him with affection. Respect his timidity, and he will sooner or later approach you.

Your cat should have a special corner for his own home. A basket, box, chair or shelf, lined with a washable soft pad cover, will be quite comfortable. Choose a clean, dry, airy spot where he'll get sunlight and be safe from harsh winds and drafts.

If your cat is going to be outdoors a lot, do not declaw him as this will leave him virtually defenseless and less able to climb and jump. If, however, he is to be an apartment pet, declawing him will no way cause him discomfort.

Overeating is as harmful to animals as it is to humans. Of course you may think you are being kind to your pet if you feed him all he will eat, but what you're doing is shortening his life.

Regular brushing keeps your cat's coat glossy, but more importantly it helps get rid of loose hair the cat is likely to swallow during his own grooming. Hairballs in the intestines can be very dangerous.

Healthy signs to look for in choosing a cat
1. Smooth, glossy coat, clear eyes and nose, alertness, white teeth and pink firm gums.
2. If your cat shakes his head or rubs his ear, he may have an earache or pain. Let a vet outline necessary treatment.
3. If your cat drools, paws at its mouth and refuses to mouth or chew food, let a vet decide if dentistry is the thing required.
