Turtles Pet Care | Housekeeping Tip

Turtles are reptiles with shells. They are land dwellers who love to dip in water from time to time.
Turtles have excellent vision (they can recognize predators and friends alike) and a special sense of smell involving an organ in the tongue! They do not have teeth, so they use their claws and jaws to tear food.

Turtles tend to be the healthiest and tamest, and the breeder will be helpful in training you with turtle care and answering any questions that come up along the way. On the downside, most breeders have a limited variety of turtles and usually like to sell hatchlings, which as a rule, die within the first year. You are always better off buying an adult.

Choosing a Healthy Turtle
- Make sure the eyes are clear and bright.
- Check the nose and mouth - they should be free of any discharge, and breathing should be free of any wheeze.
- The shell should be firm and free of any lesions.
- There shouldn't be any folds in the skin on the legs, as this may indicate dehydration or malnourishment.
- Observe its behavior - the turtle should appear responsive and alert.
- Try to visit several times to make sure the turtle has an appetite.

The aquarium setup for turtles and fishes are almost alike. Ask the pet shop owner on how to prepare the water chemistry for your turtle using the right filter that fits your budget and of your choice. A fish tank would be a good choice for first-time turtle keeper. The sides need to be high enough to prevent escape. Keep it covered if you have cats, dogs, or unsupervised children who could menace the turtle.

Plants make interesting decor, as do rocks. Use smooth rocks that are easy to clean as a place for the turtle to rest. Tank decorations tend to complicate the scene for a beginner so start out more minimalist.

Feeding

Supplement with a vitamin-mineral mix consisting of low-fat dog food combined with fruits such as melon, banana, or apple and a leafy green. Most pet shops can direct you to the right diet for your turtle. Turtles need to be fed only two or three times a week lf all goes well, your pet turtle will provide you and your family with years of enjoyment.
